Claremont at a glance

Claremont at a glance

Located in the leafy Southern Suburbs of Cape Town in the Western Cape, Claremont is an affluent, thriving commercial and residential hub about 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre. In 1913, Claremont and several other municipalities were officially incorporated into the City of Cape Town, after which considerable residential growth took place when estates such as Palmyra, Keurboom, Ravensworth, Sanatorium Estate, The Vineyard, Wyndover, and Edinburgh Estate were subdivided and developed in the 1920s and 1930s. The government enforced its apartheid system on Claremont in the 1960s, and a result, large areas of the suburb stood derelict for several years. Claremont remained predominantly residential until the early 1970s, when commercial development began. A major shopping mall, named Cavendish Square, was opened in 1973, and other shopping centres followed. There was a further building boom in the 1990s, and the suburb is currently experiencing another in both the commercial and residential property sector.

In recent years, Claremont has gained popularity as a formidable and credible node for business and commerce. This has lead to many leading brands choosing to make this their home including Virgin Active, Courierit, Coronation and Citadel to name but a few. Many businesses and offices are located around the Claremont’s most well-known shopping centre, Cavendish Square. This area has become known as the Claremont CBD and is a highly sought-after commercial node.
