Pretoria South Africa's most expensive city to live in

Category Commercial Property News

According to the Pretoria East Rekord, Pretoria has overtaken Johannesburg as South Africa's most expensive city and Brooklyn in the Eastern part of the city is more affluent than Sandton. This is surprising as their so-called more industrious neighbour Johannesburg has always been regarded as South Africa's, wealthiest city hence the name Egoli, which translates to the City of Gold in isiZulu, due to the regions expansive mining industry.

This is according to two data capturing websites Numbeo and Expatistan, the statics for Numbeo take various factors into account including, crime, cost of living, property prices, health care, pollution, traffic and quality of life. In the latest report from Numbeo.com, Pretoria was rated as the 354th most expensive city to live in on the planet whilst Johannesburg came in at 376th most expensive city to live in.

Expatistan works slightly differently to Numbeo and compares the cost of living in varying major cities across the globe. When calculating the cost of living in Pretoria as opposed to the cost of living in Johannesburg their calculator came up with these findings. Food process is 2% higher in Pretoria, housing is 12% lower. Clothing is 14% more expensive and transport is 21% percent higher in Pretoria, personal care is 1% less expensive in Pretoria whilst entertainment also comes in at 1% lower. According to the data, this makes Pretoria 3% more expensive to live in than Johannesburg and the website updates their data almost daily. The assessment is centred on data from 324 diverse individuals comparing 3,529 different expenses.

"While a large number of South African cities are covered, only those with enough input to be statistically relevant are included in the final rankings. This narrows the South African cities covered to around four, all in major economic regions". - businesstech.co.za

These statistics are backed up by a new mixed development in Pretoria which is said to be completed by 2020. "This year will also see ground being broken at the Mall of Tembisa - a phased development that has the potential to reach over 100 000sqm. Situated just off Olifantsfontein Road, the first phase will consist of over 43 000sqm of retail space and includes two proposed transport hubs, formalised schooling and high-density residential units which will all contribute to this landmark mall". - www.eprop.co.za. Although this mixed-use development is taking place in the Western regions of Pretoria the Eastern areas such as Brooklyn are still seen to have slightly higher prices for both residential and commercial property.

Leading commercial property brokerage OfficePlace have sighted the Eastern parts of Pretoria, most notably Brooklyn, as a great place to invest in commercial property and have various listed properties for office rentals available in this region of the capital city. What makes this affluent suburban and commercial area unique and sets it apart is Brooklyn has an abundance of trees especially for commercial areas, it's also within close proximity to excellent shopping and infrastructure such as the Brooklyn Mall. The fact that it's a nice balance between residential and commercial makes it a great choice for business owners wishing to have their office premises close to fantastic suburban locations as well.

With investment in Pretoria East being high and many prominent businesses already calling the area home it would seem it's a great time to move your commercial operation to Brooklyn.
